24. Nicholas3 Balfe (John2, Edward1) was born Abt. 1843 in Parkmore
Townland, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, and died 12 June 1916 in Barrie Ontario. He
married Margaret Cassin 26 April 1876 in St. Mary's RC Barrie, daughter of
William Cassin and Catherine Murphy. She was born 29 July 1843 in
Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, and died 08 April 1905 in Barrie, Ontario.
Notes for Nicholas Balfe:
Baptismal register at Tomacork (Carnew) Parish, Co. Wicklow, Ireland states,
6th August 1843, Nicholas of John Balfe & Ally Dobbs. (no location given for
their residence). Ss. (Sponsors) John Murphy & Mary Balfe.

which he is listed as 4.
1851 Census lists him as born in Ireland, age 7, and living with his parents.
1861 census lists him as born in Ireland, an RC, age 16, single and living with
his parents in Oro Twp.
1871 Census lists him (Pages 74/75) as age 26, born Ireland, R. Catholic, a
Farmer, single, living in Oro Division #1with his mother(?) Alice (Dobbs?) ,
Margaret and James (brother & sister?). Note that next on the same Census page
is Thomas Balf and family.

lists Nicholas Balfe, Grain Dealer, married to Martha Balfe, age 38, born in
Ireland, Catholic living with his wife and two children in Barrie Ontario.
1891 Census (Film T-6368, Town of Barrie, page 31, line 9) lists Nicholas
Balfe, age 49, married (to Margaret), born Ireland, both parents born in Ireland,
RC, a Butcher living in Barrie with his wife and family. Note: All the members
of the family can read and write.
1901 Census lists him as living in Barrie page 8. He is age 60, born April 17,
1841 in Ireland, he came to Canada in 1847, a Canadian, a Lumber Dealer,
living with his wife and family. (Note since his baptism has been found, it has
been assumed that this birth date of April 17, 1841 is incorrect and he was born
in the year he was baptized which was August 6, 1843). He is living at 12
Toronto St. in a brick(?) house on 25 acres. Living at 14 Toronto St. is John
Murphy (b. 1829). For a copy of this census see John Murphy file.
According to his obituary he was living at 175 Toronto St. Barrie in 1916.
1916. The Surrogate Court of Simcoe county records his probated estate
(#8935). It states that he was a lumberman, died 12 June 1916 in Barrie. He
appointed his son, Joseph Nicholas Bolfe, a lumberman of Barrie, as executor.
He gave his house at Lot 14 on the east side of Toronto St., Barrie to his
daughter Alice Bolfe. He gave his property on;
East half, Lot 19, Concession 8, Vespra,
North half, Lot 8, Concession 2, Flos,
Lot 17, Concession 13, Vespra,
West half, Lot 18, Concession 13, Vespra,
to his son Joseph Nicholas Bolfe.
The remainder of his assets be basically divided between his children Alice &
Joseph Nicholas Bolfe with Joseph Nicholas Bolfe at liberty to give some
benefit to his other son John William Bolfe at his discretion. No mention was
made of his other children.

1861 census lists Margaret C. Kasin, born U. Canada, RC, age 18, single, living
in Barrie ON with Ann (Cassin) Murphy, age 47, widow.
St. Mary's RC parish lists a baptism for Margaret Hayes (b. 1877) on 28th July
1877. One of the sponsors was Mrs. N. Balf. This is probably Margaret Cassin.
1871 census (Film C-9963, Barrie Div #2, page 19) lists Margarett Casin, 23,
born Ontario, R Catholic, single, living with Catherine Cassin, 46, married. It is
assumed that this is the same person and Catherine Cassin was her mother.
1881 census lists her as Martha Balfe, wife of Nicholas Balfe, age 37, Irish, born
in Ontario, Catholic, living with her husband and family.
1891 Census lists Margaret Balfe, married (to Nicholas Balfe), age 48, born in
Ontario, parents born in Ontario and living with her family in Barrie.
1901 census list her as age 59, born July 29, 1843 in urban Ontario, living with
her husband and family.
St. Mary's parish register states, " Margaret Balfe age 63, housewife, died in
Barrie April 8, 1905. Buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. Officiated by J.J. Ryan."
Have assumed that this is the same Margaret Balfe.

The St. Mary's parish marriage registry lists the following:
Nicholas Balf, age 32, Resident of Barrie, born in Ireland, parents John Balf and
Alice Dobbs. The bride, Margaret Cassin age 33, Resident of Barrie, born in
Canada, parents William Cassin & Catherine Murphy. Witnesses were James
Balf of Oro and Elizabeth Coupland of Vespra. The date is April 26th, 1876 and
R.A. O'Connor officiated.
The Ontario Government registration is the same as the parish registration
except it lists him as a Farmer, Elizabeth Coupland is listed as a resident of
Barrie. The marriage date is April 26th 1876 and both the bride and groom were
listed as RCs.
