Mary was born in November 1743.  Mary's father was Henry Skewes and her mother was Margery Behenna.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Skewes and Mary James. She had a brother and six sisters, named Henry, Elizabeth, Marjory, Jane, Ann, Biddy and Patience.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
