Jim's father was Henry Allan and his mother was Isabella Hunter. His paternal grandparents were Henry Allan and Devina Cook; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Hunter and Mary Gray. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Henry, Joseph, Robert, Mary, Catherine (Kate), Ina, Isabella , Jeanie and Elspeth. He was the sixth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 80 in 1978.

- Jim and Henry left Scotland for the US early 20's (?) There was a program which recruited Scottish (perhaps English and Welsh) coalminers for employment in the US coal mines.
