Maria was born in 1911.  Maria's father was George Groat MacKay and her mother was Isabella Manson.  Her paternal grandparents were Alexander MacKay and Isabella Groat; her maternal grandparents are Donald Manson and Isabella Oman.  She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Donald, Jeck and Isabella.  She is the fourth oldest of the five children.
