Donald was born in 1908.  Donald's father was George Groat MacKay and his mother was Isabella Manson.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander MacKay and Isabella Groat; his maternal grandparents are Donald Manson and Isabella Oman.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, Jeck, Isabella and Maria.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
