George was born in 1816.  George's father was John Groat and his mother was Elizabeth Mowat.  His paternal grandparents are John Groat and Elizabeth Sinclair.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Janet and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the five children.
