John was born in 1827.  John's father was John Groat and his mother was Elizabeth Mowat.  His paternal grandparents are John Groat and Elizabeth Sinclair.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, James, Janet and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the five children.
