George was born in 1900.  George's father was George Groat MacKay and his mother was Isabella Manson.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander MacKay and Isabella Groat; his maternal grandparents are Donald Manson and Isabella Oman.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named Donald, Jeck, Isabella and Maria.  He is the oldest of the five children.
