Bertha was born in 1877 in Illinois. Bertha's father was James Erwin Webb and her mother was Hester Ann Collard (Webb). Her paternal grandparents were John Webb and Elizabeth A. Mayfield (Webb). She had two brothers and five sisters, named Lewis, John, Francis, May, Florance, Girtie and Alice. She was the youngest of the eight children.
