George was born in June 1897 in Missouri. George's father was Smiley Albert Purdy and his mother was Susan Drucilla Webb (Purdy). His maternal grandparents were John Keston Webb and Martha Ann Meachum (Webb Dabbs). He had three brothers and two sisters, named Smiley, William, Edgar, Ida and Erma. He was the youngest of the six children.
