Erma was born in January 1895 in Missouri. Erma's father was Smiley Albert Purdy and her mother was Susan Drucilla Webb (Purdy). Her maternal grandparents were John Keston Webb and Martha Ann Meachum (Webb Dabbs). She had four brothers and a sister, named Smiley, William, Edgar, George and Ida. She was the second youngest of the six children.
