Joshua was born in 1867 in Tennessee. Joshua's father was William Andrew Carroll and his mother was Sarah Jane Quillen (Carroll). His paternal grandparents were Andrew Sterling Carroll and Anne Kelly (Carroll). He had six brothers and five sisters, named John, William, Liondus, Lee, Willis, James, Jenny, Polly, Martha, Malinney and Melvina. He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
