Maijken was born in 1698 in Genderen and her baptism took place on January 19th, 1698 in Eethen.1 2  Maijken's father was Willem Versteghen and her mother was Ariaentje Govertsdr Hoevenaar.  Her paternal grandfather is Dirck Willemszn Versteghen and her paternal grandmother was Maeijken Petersdr Vennix; her maternal grandparents were Govert Janszn Hoevenaar and Mayken Teunisdr Melen. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Peeter, Dirck, Jan, Govert, Anneke, Sijke Willemsdr, Antonia and Lijsbed.  She was the sixth oldest of the nine children.
