Willem was born in January 1766 in Amsterdam and his baptism took place on January 12th, 1766 in Amsterdam (Westerkerk).1   His godfather was Bart Koemans and his godmother was Jannetje Haarenkasper. Willem's father was Jan Willemszn van der Schaaf and his mother was Henrica Gerritsdr Parmentier.  His paternal grandparents were Willem van der Schaaf and Maria Mulders; his maternal grandparents were Gerrit Parmentier and Aaltje Pietersdr Wegge. He had four brothers named Willem, Gerrit, Jan and Pieter.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
