Gerrit was born in January 1761 in Amsterdam and his baptism took place on January 23rd, 1761 in Amsterdam (Westerkerk).1   His godfather was Hendrik Willemszn van der Schaaf and his godmother was Leijsje Korf. Gerrit's father was Jan Willemszn van der Schaaf and his mother was Henrica Gerritsdr Parmentier.  His paternal grandparents were Willem van der Schaaf and Maria Mulders; his maternal grandparents were Gerrit Parmentier and Aaltje Pietersdr Wegge. He had four brothers named Willem, Jan, Willem and Pieter.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
