Jan was born in March 1763 in Amsterdam and his baptism took place on March 27th, 1763 in Amsterdam (Westerkerk).1   His godfather was Hendrik van der Schaaf and his godmother was Kariena Bolt. Jan's father was Jan Willemszn van der Schaaf and his mother was Henrica Gerritsdr Parmentier.  His paternal grandparents were Willem van der Schaaf and Maria Mulders; his maternal grandparents were Gerrit Parmentier and Aaltje Pietersdr Wegge. He had four brothers named Willem, Gerrit, Willem and Pieter.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
