Thomas was born in August 1722 in Nieuwaal and his baptism took place on August 16th, 1722 in Gameren.1 2   His godmother was Peterke Huybertsdr van Haaften. Thomas' father was Cornelis Thomaszn van de Laar and his mother was Pieternel Dirksdr van der Velde.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Corneliszn van de Laar and Sara Petersdr van Haaften; his maternal grandparents were Dirk Pierszn van der Velde and Annetje Sijbrantsdr N.N.. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Dirk, Peter, Jan, Sybrand, Huijbert, Saerke, Sara and Anna.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died before April 28th, 1778.3
