Sybrand was born in 1731 in Nieuwaal and his baptism took place on May 14th, 1731 in Gameren.1 2   His godmother was Aarke de Groot. Sybrand's father was Cornelis Thomaszn van de Laar and his mother was Pieternel Dirksdr van der Velde.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Corneliszn van de Laar and Sara Petersdr van Haaften; his maternal grandparents were Dirk Pierszn van der Velde and Annetje Sijbrantsdr N.N.. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Dirk, Peter, Jan, Huijbert, Saerke, Sara and Anna.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 19 in 1750.3
