His paternal grandparents were James Harper and Sarah Lees; his maternal grandparents were William Haywood and Mary. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Henry, William, Ezekiel, Joseph, Mary, Sarah, Dinah and Mary. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.-
