James was born on May 29th, 1846 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England.1   James' father was Samuel Knowles and his mother was Ann (Annie).  His paternal grandfather was James Knowles and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth Biggs. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Corbin, Chester, Manoah, Samuel, John , Frank, Harriett, Ruth, Caroline, Melissa, Elizabeth and Mary Ann.  He died at the age of 52 on July 8th, 1898 in Providence, RI.  He was buried in Providence, Providence, RI.2 1
