Harriett was born on March 14th, 1825 in Croomhall, Glocestershire, england.  Harriett's father was Samuel Knowles and her mother was Ann (Annie).  Her paternal grandfather was James Knowles and her paternal grandmother is Elizabeth Biggs. She had seven brothers and five sisters, named Corbin, Chester, Manoah, Samuel, James, John , Frank, Ruth, Caroline, Melissa, Elizabeth and Mary Ann.
