John was born in 1750 in Bower Chalk, Wiltshire and his christening took place there on January 7th, 1750.1 2   John's father was John Witt and his mother was Jane Frampton.  His paternal grandparents were John Witt and Jane Windser; his maternal grandparents were Allen Frampton and Jane. He had eight sisters named Jane, Betty, Ann, Mary, Jane, Lucy, Sarah and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
