Henry was born in December 1872 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.1   Henry's father was Bartholomew Preston and his mother was Rebecca Mary Ann Crouch. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Alfred, Bartholomew, George, John, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Rosina and Ada.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
