George was born in December 1871 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.1   George's father was Bartholomew Preston and his mother was Rebecca Mary Ann Crouch. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Alfred, Bartholomew, Henry, John, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Rosina and Ada.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
