Alfred was born in March 1861 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.1   Alfred's father was Bartholomew Preston and his mother was Rebecca Mary Ann Crouch. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Bartholomew, George, Henry, John, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Rosina and Ada.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 3 in March 1864 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.2
