Thomas was born in September 1861 in Windermere, Westmorland.1   Thomas' father was Thomas Latham and his mother was Catherine Gott.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Addison Gott and Ann Ray. He had four brothers and a sister, named John, William, Richard, Charles and Mary.  He was the oldest of the six children.
