John was born in March 1863 in Windermere, Westmorland.1   John's father was Thomas Latham and his mother was Catherine Gott.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Addison Gott and Ann Ray. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Richard, Charles and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
