Mary was born in June 1871 in Windermere, Westmorland.1   Mary's father was Thomas Latham and her mother was Catherine Gott.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Addison Gott and Ann Ray. She had five brothers named Thomas, John, William, Richard and Charles.  She was the youngest of the six children.
