Richard was born in December 1866 in Windermere, Westmorland.1   Richard's father was Thomas Latham and his mother was Catherine Gott.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Addison Gott and Ann Ray. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, William, Charles and Mary.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 1 in September 1868 in Ulverston, Lancashire.2
