William was born in December 1857 in Ventnor, Isle of Wight.1   William's father was James Jennings and his mother was Elizabeth Deighton.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Jennings and Ann Delasalle; his maternal grandparents were James Deighton and Jane Hayden. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Elizabeth, Clara and Deborah.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
