James was born on November 14th, 1826 in Newport, Isle of Wight and his christening took place on April 15th, 1827 in Wesleyan, Newport, Isle of Wight.1   James' father was Henry Jennings and his mother was Ann Delasalle. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Henry, John, Jeremiah, William, Eliza, Sarah and Deborah.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
