Clara was born in June 1859 in Ventnor, Isle of Wight.1   Clara's father was James Jennings and her mother was Elizabeth Deighton.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Jennings and Ann Delasalle; her maternal grandparents were James Deighton and Jane Hayden. She had two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Elizabeth and Deborah.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
