James was born in March 1853 in Ventnor, Isle of Wight.1   James' father was James Jennings and his mother was Elizabeth Deighton.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Jennings and Ann Delasalle; his maternal grandparents were James Deighton and Jane Hayden. He had a brother and three sisters, named William, Elizabeth, Clara and Deborah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
