William was born on August 20th, 1831 in Shoreditch, Middlesex and his christening took place on June 12th, 1832 in Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, Middlesex.1 2   William's father was John Daniel Horncastle and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Phillips.  His paternal grandparents were John Horncastle and Sophia Chaming; his maternal grandparents were William Phillips and Ann Sims. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Thomas, Francis, George, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Jemina and Sarah.  He died at the age of 63 in 1894 in Whitechapel, Middlesex.3
