John was born on August 24th, 1824 in Shoreditch, Middlesex and his christening took place on September 16th, 1824 in Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, Middlesex.1 2   John's father was John Daniel Horncastle and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Phillips.  His paternal grandparents were John Horncastle and Sophia Chaming; his maternal grandparents were William Phillips and Ann Sims. He had five brothers and five sisters, named James, Thomas, William, Francis, George, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Jemina and Sarah.
