Francis was born on November 9th, 1840 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex and his christening took place on February 9th, 1849 in Saint Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex.1 2   Francis' father was John Daniel Horncastle and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Phillips.  His paternal grandparents were John Horncastle and Sophia Chaming; his maternal grandparents were William Phillips and Ann Sims. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Thomas, William, George, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Jemina and Sarah.  Francis and George were twins.  He died at the age of 59 in March 1900 in Mile End, Middlesex.3
