John was born in 1777 in Whitechapel, Middlesex and his christening took place in August 1777 in St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, Middlesex.1 2   John's father was William Horncastle and his mother was Sarah. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, William, James, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Lydia and Ann.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
