James was born in 1794 in Whitechapel, Middlesex and his christening took place on May 25th, 1794 in St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, Middlesex.1   James' father was William Horncastle and his mother was Sarah. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Samuel, William, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Lydia and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
