William was born in 1788 in Whitechapel, Middlesex and his christening took place in July 1788 in St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, Middlesex.1 2   William's father was William Horncastle and his mother was Sarah. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Samuel, James, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Lydia and Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
