Samuel was born in June 1875 in Mile End N Town, Middlesex.1   Samuel's father was Samuel John Horncastle and his mother was Elizabeth Howard Richardson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas James Horncastle and Elizabeth Ritchie; his maternal grandparents were William Richardson and Mary Howard. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, William, George, Caroline, Sarah, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 72 in March 1948 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.2
