John was born in December 1869 in Mile End N Town, Middlesex and his christening took place on November 14th, 1869 in St Philip the Apostle, Stepney.1 2  John's father was Samuel John Horncastle and his mother was Elizabeth Howard Richardson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas James Horncastle and Elizabeth Ritchie; his maternal grandparents were William Richardson and Mary Howard. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, William, George, Caroline, Sarah, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
