Eliza was born in March 1849 in Clerkenwell, Middlesex.1   Eliza's father was John Horncastle and her mother was Sarah Stockham.  Her paternal grandparents were John Daniel Horncastle and Mary Elizabeth Phillips. She had four brothers named William, Frederick, George and John.  She was the oldest of the five children.
