Mary was born in 1823 in Thornford, Dorset and her christening took place there on July 20th, 1823.1 2  Mary's father was Joseph Christopher Bugler and her mother was Jane Bishop.  Her paternal grandparents were James Bugler and Elizabeth Ragless; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Bishop and Sarah Tuck. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Luke, Luke, Jane and Maria.  She was the second oldest of the six children. She had a half-brother named Robert.
