Maria was born in 1829.  Maria's father was Joseph Christopher Bugler and her mother was Jane Bishop.  Her paternal grandparents were James Bugler and Elizabeth Ragless; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Bishop and Sarah Tuck. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Luke, Luke, Jane and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the six children. She had a half-brother named Robert.
