Luke was born on March 1st, 1830 in Thornford, Dorset.1   Luke's father was Joseph Christopher Bugler and his mother was Jane Bishop.  His paternal grandparents were James Bugler and Elizabeth Ragless; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Bishop and Sarah Tuck. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Luke, Jane, Mary and Maria.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Robert.
