Joseph was born on June 17th, 1827 in Thornford, Dorset.1   Joseph's father was Joseph Christopher Bugler and his mother was Jane Bishop.  His paternal grandparents were James Bugler and Elizabeth Ragless; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Bishop and Sarah Tuck. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Luke, Luke, Jane, Mary and Maria.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Robert.
