Stephen was born in 1745 in Newton Toney, Wiltshire and his baptism took place there on February 20th, 1745.1 2   Stephen's father was John Browning and his mother was Rachel Girle.  His paternal grandparents were John Browning and Hannah Judd; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Girle and Sarah Reed. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, William, John, Joseph, James, Elizabeth and Rachel.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 54 on August 11th, 1799.3
