Thomas was born in 1867 in Selby, Yorkshire.1   Thomas' father was Charles Brown and his mother was Mary Ann Howcroft.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Brown and Sarah Brewins. He had three brothers and a sister, named George, Arthur, Herbert and Lucy.  He was the oldest of the five children.
