Arthur was born in 1874 in Selby, Yorkshire.1   Arthur's father was Charles Brown and his mother was Mary Ann Howcroft.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Brown and Sarah Brewins. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, George, Herbert and Lucy.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
