George was born in 1869 in Selby, Yorkshire.1   George's father was Charles Brown and his mother was Mary Ann Howcroft.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Brown and Sarah Brewins. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Arthur, Herbert and Lucy.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
